Our story
Hiya! I’m Melissa, founder of Tiny Design Studio®, which was first registered as a business back in 2005.
A child of the seventies and eighties, I have lived across the United States—from New Hampshire to Hawai’i. A month spent backpacking along the Queensland Coast of Australia broadened my worldview and reinforced my love of the ocean and coastal living.
Growing up in the San Fernando Valley in the eighties had a huge impact on my early design aesthetics. Riding my bike down Ventura Boulevard and hanging out at The Galleria and Tower Records exposed me to so many art forms—from architecture and clothing styles to album covers and the beauty of Southern California.
The winds of change eventually pushed me to my current location just north of Atlanta, Georgia, where I’ve lived for nearly 30 years and raised two incredible humans—my absolute greatest accomplishments.
Designer tendencies
Early artistic leanings showed up in the form of hand-drawn calendars I made for my grandmother, which she requested annually during my early years. Along the way, I was enrolled in drawing and painting classes. Spending a few elementary years at The Children’s Workshop further encouraged outside-the-box thinking. Landing at Kalāheo High School in Hawai’i gave me the chance to explore cinematography and media literacy. One of my professors declared that computers were the future of design—but I definitely wasn’t an early adopter.
During my time at the University of Hawai’i, I focused on fine art and art history and interned with a graphic designer in Honolulu. After moving to Georgia, I continued studying art at Kennesaw State University, where graphic design came to the forefront. In the early nineties, I realized that many early-Internet websites weren’t very pleasing to the eye. I took an HTML Fundamentals course and began creating websites in Macromedia Fireworks. I designed to my heart’s content and then “sliced” the designs, exported them, and built them out as web pages in Macromedia Dreamweaver—one of the first tools to provide a visual interface alongside HTML.
I worked with other developers to create custom portals and dynamic, database-driven websites. I learned Flash animation. Next came the flexible and open-source WordPress framework, which allowed for customizations but relied heavily on plugins and server maintenance. In 2011, I became a Shopify Partner and built websites for e-commerce-driven brands that required payment processing and inventory management.
Current specialty
Within the past six years, we began building websites on the Squarespace platform, which first piqued our interest in 2009.
Five years ago, we joined the wonderful Squarespace Circle community. Around this time, we realized Squarespace allowed us to design and strategize while eliminating the need for server maintenance and plugin updates—a creative’s dream!
From new builds to migrations from other platforms, including WordPress, Squarespace website design is my jam.
Pleased to meet you and excited to collaborate on your project!
“Melissa is a pleasure to work with—from concept to design to launch. She is smart, pays attention to details and is a great problem solver.
I highly recommend her and Tiny Design Studio.”
